Solus OS 3 is now available

Hello Solus fans. The new version of Solus OS 3 is now available with many improvements and bug fixes. The new Solus OS 3 is now powered with Linux Kernel 4.12.7 which has better hardware supports for most recent hardware. As noted on the official page, Solus OS 3 now comes with AppArmor LSM enabled by default that provide functionality for Snapd.

Solus OS 3 comes with three different Desktop Environment: Budgie, GNOME and MATE. Budgie Desktop is now updated to version 10.4 that is the latest stable version. It equipped with Adapta GTK Theme and Papirus Icon Theme as default.

Kodi 17.0 is available, install it on Solus OS

KODI 17.0 has just released few days ago. Now I want to guide you to install Kodi 17.0 codename Krypton on Solus OS. Kodi is a special software that will turn our Linux box into a rich features multimedia center. We ca use Kodi to play video files, audio, pictures and many more. To add more functionality, we can also install addons from various sources. We can watch online TV and many others.
Kodi 17.0 brings a lot of improvements, bug fixes and some additional features, new fresh skin. For more information, please read Kodi 17.0 release announcement. This new Kodi 17.0 has a totally new interface compared to previous version. Its getting better and lot easier. 


Kodi 17.0 Installation on Solus OS

The easiest way to install Kodi is using Software Center. 
  1. Open Solus Software Center
  2. Click Search and type "kodi" without quotes.
  3. Click Kodi from the search result
  4. Press Install and enter your root password.

Install Veracrypt, powerful encryption tool on Solus OS

When this post is written, Veracrypt 1.19 is available on Solus OS repository. This tutorial is going to show you how to install Veracrypt on Solus OS. Veracrypt (based on the popular TrueCrypt) is a powerful encryption tool which can be used to create encrypted containers. There are many encryption algorithm available in Veracrypt such as AES, Serpent, Twofish and many more. Veracrypt comes with a very simple user interface and wizard based. So, its easy for everyone to have encrypted containers/volume.


Steps to install Veracrypt on Solus OS

The easiest way is to install via Terminal. Last time I tried to install Veracrypt using Software Center, I ended up with failure. So, this command below is the solution.
sudo eopkg install veracrypt
The command will install veracrypt immediately.

Install Arc Flatabulous Theme on Solus OS

Solus OS is a beautiful Linux desktop out of the box. I mean, we don't have to do any tweak to make Solus OS beautiful because its already come with beautiful look. But as usual, I will apply my favorite Arc-Flatabulous GTK theme on this Solus OS. The installation take a while because I need to install some additional packages which is not mentioned on the official page of Arc-Flatabulous




This small make over turned my Solus OS more handy, and more eye catching. If you are interested to install this Arc-Flatabulous theme on Solus OS, follow these steps:

Step 1. Install some required packages

Open Terminal and paste the following command
sudo eopkg install m4 make libgtk-3-devel git autoconf automake

Step 2. Download Arc-Flatabulous package via git

git clone https://github.com/andreisergiu98/arc-flatabulous-theme && cd arc-flatabulous-theme

Step 3. Build and Install

./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr
sudo make install
Once finished, you can change the GTK theme using Gnome Tweak Tool. Install it if you don't have it already.
sudo eopkg install gnome-tweak-tool

Atom 1.14 is released, install it on Solus OS

The new version of Atom 1.14 is now available for download. This tutorial will show you how to install Atom 1.14 on Solus OS. Atom is a rich features text editor for Linux (Windows version also available). It brings a text editor to the whole new level. You can write up your code (PHP, Shell Script, C#, Python, HTML, Perl and many more) in Atom. 
What's new on Atom 1.14:
  • Overhaul of the bundled C# grammar
  • Upgrade find-and-replace to use new marker layer API for fast clearing of markers
  • Option for avoiding overlay movements
  • Reduce the impact of leaking Editor, Selection, & Cursor objects

Steps to install Atom 1.14 on Solus OS

A. Via Terminal

Open Terminal console and type the following command:
sudo eopkg update-repo
sudo eopkg install atom

B. Via Software Center

  1. Open Solus Software Center 
  2. Click Search
  3. Type "atom" without quotes 
  4. Click Atom
  5. Click Install to start the installation
